Takeoff

So I’m hunched on the floor in a grimy corner of JFK, feeling a compulsion to begin this blogging odyssey right here right now (and also not quite prepared to go meet the kids on my program–a bit too fried from packing and goodbyes to socialize). The iBook umbilical cord is going to be a hard one to cut; I feel like I’m enjoying my last few breaths of air before yanking the life support.

At the same time, my temporary new life on the other side of the world is becoming more real every minute. Dancing up and down on the corner of 114th and Broadway, trying desperately to keep warm while waiting for a shuttle bus, I watched my classmates hustling on their pre-class errands. It’s certainly a relief to not be rushing into another headlong semester of short nights and constant worry. But I’m pretty sure the alternative is going to be more challenging, in different ways.

OK, so I don’t really have anything to say. My co-bloggers already in country–Jess, Travis, and Katie–will have much more interesting dispatches before you know it. Welcome to Off Broadway!

  1. Thanks for the right here right now report. I sit in my office with super-powdery large flakes out side the window, 12 degrees F. And try to imagine what happens for you now. I’m looking forward to hearing more, and also to hearing not much at all, if that’s what is called for in order to fully inhale and exhale, letting go all meta in favor of being right there right then.

    MLK quote:
I am convinced that if we are to get on the right side of the world revolution, we as a nation must undergo a radical revolution of values. We must rapidly begin the shift from a “thing-oriented” society to a “person-oriented” society. When machines and computers, profit motives and property rights are considered more important than people, the giant triplets of racism, materialism, and militarism are incapable of being conquered.
